Clwyd South AM donates rare golden oak to Corwen garden project

A GARDEN project to breathe new life into Corwen has received a donation from Assembly Member Ken Skates.

Mr Skates, the Labour AM for Clwyd South, presented project leader Isabella Martin with a rare young golden oak tree which will be planted in a garden being created to establish a flourishing pedestrian walkway into the town centre.

The initiative is part of the Camp Little Hope scheme, commissioned by the Corwen Partnership and the Arts Council of Wales to renovate a field that separates the town square from the future platform of the forthcoming Llangollen Railway.

Mr Skates said: “I’m really impressed with the project, and once it really starts taking shape it will make an amazing difference to the area. The aim is to create a pedestrian walkway into the town centre and breathe new life into what was until recently an unused field, and I hope that carrying out these huge improvements will create a green space that the whole town can be proud of.”

Mr Skates has made his own contribution to the garden by donating a sapling from an acorn from an historic local oak.

He added: “The acorn was from a huge oak which is reportedly one of the last ever planted by the famous landscape architect ‘Capability’ Brown at Wynnstay. I am told the original tree is considered one of the finest golden oaks anywhere in Europe, so I hope it will be a good addition to what I’m sure will be a wonderful project for generations of people in Corwen to enjoy.”
