CLWYD South Assembly Member Ken Skates got in touch with his feminine side to raise awareness of a ‘crucial’ campaign.
The Labour AM donned a pair of high heels outside the Senedd on Tuesday, December 10, as part of Welsh Women’s Aid’s ‘Walk a Mile in her Shoes’ domestic abuse initiative.
The event signalled the end of the national charity’s ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence’, which runs from International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25, also known as White Ribbon Day, and International Human Rights Day on December 10.
Mr Skates said: “Wearing high highs isn’t something I’ve been asked to do before, but I was happy to help to raise awareness of a crucial campaign. To show solidarity, my Welsh Labour colleague Carl Sargeant AM – who has done a lot of excellent work to help stamp out domestic abuse – decided to join me.
“We know it is not your everyday request, but it’s incredibly important for the men of Wales to understand the role they have to play in ending violence against women, and for their male elected representatives to be seen leading the way on this issue.”
A Welsh Women’s Aid’s spokeswoman said: “This is a fun way to get the community to talk about something that is often very difficult to discuss – gender relations and sexual violence.”
