A Member of the Senedd has called for urgent assurances that the chaos engulfing Downing Street will not derail the bid to revamp the Racecourse Ground.
Ken Skates said he had written to the UK Government’s new Levelling Up Secretary Greg Clark today – hours after he was appointed – to ask for confirmation that long-awaited funding for the Wrexham Gateway project will be announced soon.
Mr Skates, MS for Clwyd South, said: “The political turmoil at Westminster cannot be allowed to hold up this transformational project. So much hard work has gone into it already, and the Welsh Labour Government has already pledged millions of pounds of funding which the people of Wrexham now need the UK Government to match.
“The Gateway project will be huge for Wrexham and the long-awaited redevelopment of the Kop will not only provide a stadium befitting of a football club and county borough on the up, but will also enable us to host regular international football at the Racecourse again.
“I have written to the new Levelling Up Secretary, Greg Clark, seeking urgent assurances that Wrexham will not fall victim to the political in-fighting which has torn Westminster and the UK Government apart. I look forward to his response.”
Mr Skates is one of a number of Labour Members of the Senedd, MPs and Wrexham councillors to have publicly backed the Wrexham AFC campaign to secure UK Government funding. Earlier this year he also wrote to the Football Association of Wales calling for international football to return to Wrexham – which hinges upon the Kop redevelopment.
He added: “Ministers in the Welsh Government have been helping to drive this vision from the outset and have already invested millions of pounds into the Wrexham Gateway project, which has always been a joint venture with Wrexham Council the UK Government.
“We now need Westminster to deliver on its promises and the show the same level of support to help see this once in a generation project through to fruition.”
