AM calls on council to tackle Llangollen speeding

An Assembly Member has called on Denbighshire Council to do more to stop speeding on a road used by children walking to school.

Clwyd South AM Ken Skates wants the authority to consider traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps to slow irresponsible drivers on Brook Street in Llangollen, which leads from the A5 up to the Pengwern estate.

“I have raised this issue before, but sadly residents have seen no improvement and some people are still driving way too fast for such a built-up area,” said Mr Skates, whose constituency office is in the town.

“During term-time a lot of children walk to school up Brook Street, so something needs to be done to stop them being put in danger.”

Mr Skates was vocal in his support for residents who wanted the 20mph limit introducing near Ysgol Bryn Collen and Welsh-speaking Ysgol Gymraeg y Gwernant after being contacted by a constituent concerned about speeding near the two sites on the estate. He now wants to see more done.

“The 20mph signs obviously aren’t having the desired effect, so I have asked the council to consider further measures to help stop speeding in this area,” said Mr Skates.

Mr Skates added: “Something like speed bumps would force drivers to slow down and help make the area safer by reducing the chances of a child getting seriously hurt.”
