Clwyd South AM Ken Skates hosted an event with guest speakers and fellow politicians to discuss the ‘crucial’ issues of mental health and racism.
Labour AM Mr Skates organised the event – ’Sefyll yn erbyn Hilliaeth / Standing up to Racism’ – at the National Assembly in Cardiff Bay.
Among the attendees were speakers Sunil Patel from Show Racism the Red Card, Simon Jones from Sports Wales and Rebecca Iddon, project coordinator at young people’s advice helpline Meic Cymru.
Each talked about their own real-life experiences of racism and mental health issues, which was followed by a question-and-answer session.
Mr Skates said: “I enjoyed having the opportunity to arrange and host an event on important issues which are very close to my heart and that affect so many people in Wales and further afield.”
On November 28, 2012, Mr Skates and three other AMs spoke about their own experiences with mental health problems in a ground-breaking debate in the Senedd.
He added: “It’s been two years since I decided to speak out about my own experience of dealing with Generalised Anxiety Disorder, and it was of particular importance for me at the this event to ensure people suffering with mental health issues feel able to speak out too and receive the help they need.”
