Clwyd South MS Ken Skates has visited HMP Berwyn in Wrexham to learn about the rehabilitation programmes and mental health support offered to prisoners.
Mr Skates met education and mental health support teams during his visit to one of the UK’s largest prisons, which currently holds 1,831 as a training and resettlement institution.
He said: “HMP Berwyn is one of the biggest employers in the area, with more than 720 staff. It offers a huge economic benefit to the area and ensures that prisoners from North Wales and the North West have a prison to rehabilitate in here in the region.
“I was particularly keen to learn about how prisoners with mental health challenges are supported in their journey back into society, as well as the training opportunities on offer.
“It was hugely reassuring to see how much effort is made to improve the mental health and skills of the men serving time at the prison. Novus Cambria, the training facility, is an outstanding resource for getting prisoners the skills and experience needed for a productive life after leaving HMP Berwyn. It was also heartening to learn about how local employers are supporting many men with employment opportunities.”
Mr Skates added: “The prison’s wellbeing centre is also an excellent place for men to get support for their mental health. Many have complex needs and in order to successfully rehabilitate and prepare for life after prison such support is vitally important.
“The Governor and staff at HMP Berwyn showed clear and passionate commitment to ensuring as many prisoners as possible are able to change the course of their lives for the better.
